Spain Prepares New Migrant Shelter in Ceuta
(MENAFN) Spanish authorities are preparing another temporary facility in Ceuta to house hundreds of migrants who remain without shelter following a significant influx in July, according to reports.
Workers begin installing two tents in an open area in the Los Rosales neighborhood, near the Nuestra Senora de Africa nursery school. National Police officers are also stationed at the location to help prevent potential disturbances.
Construction work starts Friday after employees and parents raise concerns over the facility’s close proximity to the nursery.
The school is scheduled to reopen on Sept. 28 and is expected to accommodate around 176 children aged up to three years old.
Authorities have also established temporary accommodation sites in Loma Colmenar, La Hipica and the Tarajal industrial zone for migrants who have been sleeping outdoors or in mountainous areas because of limited shelter capacity.
Territorial Policy Minister Angel Victor Torres says the facilities are needed to help authorities register and identify migrants before most are eventually returned to Morocco.
The CCOO trade union calls for an alternative arrangement that would provide migrants with assistance while also addressing concerns raised by families and protecting the operation of public services.
Meanwhile, the CSIF union calls for a formal assessment of potential risks and guarantees regarding security before the nursery resumes operations.
