Zelenskyy Says Russia Targets Airports Ahead of US Envoys Visit

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russia of carrying out “demonstrative strikes” against airports in Kyiv and Boryspil overnight, shortly before a planned visit to Ukraine by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump.

“Clearly, these Russian strikes on the airports are a reaction to the discussions and preparations for the possibility of the U.S. side using an aircraft to travel to Ukraine and land at Kyiv Airport or Boryspil Airport,” Zelenskyy wrote on US social media company X.

Zelenskyy says Russian forces intentionally strike the airports, marking the first such attacks on the facilities in some time.

“Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds’ in response to American diplomacy,” he said. “We have taken note of this Russian move, and next week we will adjust our operation accordingly regarding Russian airspace, which has become dangerous because of our drones and missiles in the sky.”

Despite the attacks, Zelenskyy says Ukraine will not allow security threats to derail diplomatic efforts and reiterates that Kyiv remains committed to advancing efforts toward peace.

“Russia will be held accountable for what it does,” he said.

Witkoff and Kushner are expected to travel to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend as part of ongoing US diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to reports.
