Ceasefire Begins to Support Zaporizhzhia Power Repairs
(MENAFN) A temporary localized ceasefire takes effect Saturday to allow repairs to a damaged power line supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, according to reports.
The arrangement, brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency, is intended to help restore the facility’s off-site electricity supply following an extended outage.
The nuclear plant loses access to its only remaining external power connection, the 330-kilovolt Ferosplavna-1 line, on Aug. 20 amid military activity on the northern bank of the Dnipro River.
Since the disconnection, the facility has depended on emergency diesel generators to maintain cooling systems for its six reactors and spent fuel storage pools.
“The plant is now running low on diesel fuel reserves and faces a possible station blackout within days unless off-site power is restored or more fuel reserves can be transported to the site, located in an active war zone,” the statement said.
Ukrainian technicians are expected to start repairing the damaged line later Saturday after mine-clearance operations are completed in the surrounding area under the temporary ceasefire.
According to reports, both Russia and Ukraine cooperate with the IAEA during the process, with the parties engaging constructively to help safeguard nuclear safety and security.
