Iran Slams US Strikes on Oil Tankers as "War Crime"

(MENAFN) Iran issued a forceful condemnation Saturday of US military strikes on three of its crude oil tankers, branding the action "illegal and aggressive" and accusing Washington of waging a naval blockade and economic war against the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry declared in a statement: "These illegal and aggressive actions, carried out in continuation of the US military aggression against Iran and as part of its naval blockade and economic war against our homeland, constitute a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, a war crime, and a clear threat to international peace and the security of commercial shipping."

Tehran vowed to "firmly defend its sovereignty and national interests" in the face of what it called American "state terrorism and aggressive actions," the ministry said, pointing specifically to "the continued naval blockade and economic war, as well as attacks on commercial vessels" as examples of such conduct.

Any fallout from further US "aggressive and interventionist actions" in the region, the ministry warned, would fall squarely on Washington and its "accomplices and partners."

The condemnation followed an announcement from US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said American forces struck and disabled the three Iranian tankers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships stationed in the region.

Tensions across the Middle East have been climbing steadily since joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran began Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks against Israeli and American targets throughout the region.

A memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in June had aimed to guarantee freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but its rollout has since stalled over unresolved disputes regarding security arrangements in the waterway.
