Israeli Forces Shell Al-Rafid Outskirts in Southern Syria Again
(MENAFN) Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of Al-Rafid, a town in the Quneitra countryside of southern Syria, on Saturday, according to media reports.
A Syrian broadcaster reported that six shells struck the area, though no casualties or damage were immediately confirmed. Earlier in the day, an Israeli military force made up of five vehicles had advanced toward the town's outskirts before pulling back; no arrests were reported in connection with the incursion.
The shelling adds to a pattern of recent Israeli military activity in the region. On Thursday, Israeli forces fired two artillery shells near Tal al-Ahmar, also in southern Quneitra. Separately, an official news agency reported that Israeli troops detained a shepherd west of Al-Rafid on Tuesday, releasing him several hours later.
Southern Syria—particularly the Quneitra and Daraa provinces—has been the site of recurring Israeli incursions involving raids, search operations, arrests, and the setup of military checkpoints. Last month, Israeli warplanes struck the runway at the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in northwestern Idlib province eight times, damaging the facility's infrastructure.
Israeli military activity in Syria has escalated since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, after which Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement void and moved to seize control of the Syrian buffer zone.
