US Missile Strikes Iranian Tanker Near Kharg Island

(MENAFN) A US missile strikes an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island on Saturday, according to Iranian reports.

The vessel is described as a “small vessel,” with reports indicating that no casualties are recorded in the incident.

Kharg Island plays a central role in Iran’s oil export infrastructure, accounting for an estimated 90% to 95% of the country’s crude shipments.

US President Donald Trump has previously threatened to seize control of the strategically important island.

Tensions across the region have intensified since US and Israeli attacks on Iran began Feb. 28. Tehran has responded by launching missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as US-linked interests in several parts of the region.

The United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding on June 18 addressing freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, progress on putting the agreement into practice has remained stalled because of disagreements over security measures governing the strategic waterway.
