Iran Claims Missile Strike on US Carrier, Destroyer in Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Sunday that its forces fired ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a Navy destroyer, asserting that both vessels sustained damage and pulled back from the area.
According to a statement carried an Iranian news agency, the IRGC's Aerospace Force launched the missiles at the two warships, which it accused of harassing Iranian shipping and taking part in a maritime blockade. Both vessels, the IRGC claimed, withdrew from the "engagement area" after being damaged.
The Guard Corps further stated that US Central Command (CENTCOM) had acknowledged that two of its warships were targeted, a response Tehran characterized as confirmation that the strike had taken place. It cautioned that any continued American military action in the region would trigger "heavier" retaliation from Iran's armed forces.
In a second, separate statement issued early Sunday, the IRGC said its navy struck a remotely operated US military vessel that it claimed had attempted to enter a protected zone of the Strait of Hormuz. No specifics were given on how the vessel was attacked or whether it was damaged. The Guard Corps also repeated Tehran's longstanding claim that it controls access to the strait and renewed its call for the US to withdraw from the region.
The overnight claims followed an earlier IRGC Navy statement on Saturday saying its forces had struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three additional vessels linked to the US elsewhere, in what it described as retaliation for American strikes on Iranian tankers.
CENTCOM, for its part, said Iran had fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships operating in regional waters, but that both ships successfully evaded the incoming fire and no American personnel were harmed. US forces then struck three Iranian crude oil tankers in response, CENTCOM said.
