Kremlin: Putin-Witkoff-Kushner Talks "Extremely Frank"

(MENAFN) Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were "substantive, constructive and extremely frank," Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said Sunday.

The Moscow meeting, held Saturday, stretched over three hours and 10 minutes and touched on far more than the war in Ukraine, extending to potential large-scale joint Russian-US ventures, according to a state news agency, which cited Ushakov's account.

Ushakov said Putin reiterated Moscow's willingness to keep working with Washington toward a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The Russian leader also emphasized the importance of tackling the war's "root causes," according to the aide, and pointed to recent battlefield gains by Russian forces as evidence of his confidence that Moscow would ultimately secure its objectives.

For their part, the American envoys presented a range of proposals for potentially ending the war, Ushakov said, and committed to factoring Putin's positions into their upcoming discussions in Kyiv. Ushakov added that Putin and US President Donald Trump would continue communicating directly, alongside ongoing engagement through the American negotiating team.

Witkoff and Kushner departed Moscow following the talks and are due in Kyiv on Sunday.

Separately, a White House official told the news agency that the two envoys' meeting with Putin was part of a broader push by Trump to bring the war—now in its fifth year—to a close. The official said the delegation also included representatives from the National Security Council and the State and Treasury departments, who joined discussions on proposals for ending the fighting.

According to the official, the two sides discussed "substantive plans" for next steps, with an announcement expected within weeks. The official added that the US delegation was looking forward to "equally productive" talks in Ukraine.
