Trump Envoys Seek To Revive US-Mediated Talks To End Russia's War NYT

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Following the meeting at the Kremlin, which lasted about three hours, Putin's special representative Kirill Dmitriev described the visit by the U.S. negotiators as an "important peacemaking visit," Ukrinform reports, citing The New York Times.

Welcoming them, Putin said: "The situation we have to deal with today is certainly not simple." He also conveyed his "best wishes and words of gratitude" to Trump.

Kushner, for his part, greeted Putin by saying "happy holiday" in Russian, referring to Moscow's City Day, which was celebrated on Saturday.

On September 5, Putin allegedly ordered a three-day halt to strikes on Kyiv. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, this was linked to "preparations for the conduct of talks in Kyiv."

The Kremlin leader assured the U.S. envoys that Russia had not carried out any strikes on Kyiv since midnight on Saturday. At the same time, Russian attacks on other regions of Ukraine continued.

Russia is reportedly insisting on territorial claims that Ukraine has rejected.

Witkoff and Kushner are expected to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday for their first talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Zelensky, Ukraine is prepared to refrain from strikes on Moscow until the end of Monday and expects Russia to likewise refrain from striking Kyiv.
