Kariv: Netanyahu's Ouster "Existential Need" for Israel
(MENAFN) Opposition lawmaker Gilad Kariv called on Saturday for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be removed from power, framing the demand as an “existential need for Israeli society.”
The Democrats party member leveled the criticism in a post on X, taking aim at Netanyahu's handling of the army's inquiry into the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
“Just as Netanyahu avoided visiting the kibbutzim in the area surrounding Gaza for months after Oct. 7, he is also avoiding dealing with the Israeli army's investigations into everything that happened on Oct. 7,” Kariv wrote.
He went on to accuse the prime minister of repeatedly “abandoning” Israel's security and of showing “complete incompetence” in his stewardship of national defense.
“Such a person must not be allowed to make any decisions about our future and the future of our children,” Kariv said, reiterating that removing Netanyahu from office amounts to an “existential need for Israeli society.”
The comments add to mounting pressure from opposition figures and large segments of the Israeli public, who have pushed for a formal state commission of inquiry into the security failures that preceded the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. Netanyahu's government has resisted that approach, instead backing a panel appointed through political rather than judicial channels.
The pressure comes as Israel heads toward Knesset elections on Oct. 27, with polling showing Netanyahu and his Likud party losing ground.
Netanyahu remains on trial on corruption charges and is separately wanted by the International Criminal Court, which has accused him of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the war in Gaza. More than 73,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, according to reported figures, with violence persisting despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States.
