Algeria Recovers Body of Boy, 10, After 4-Day Well Rescue Effort

(MENAFN) Algerian authorities recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy on Saturday, ending a four-day operation to rescue him from a well in the western province of El Bayadh.

The Civil Protection service confirmed in a statement that the boy, identified as Ayoub, had been found dead.

"The Civil Protection service, together with local authorities, mobilized all human and material resources for this operation," the statement said.

Ayoub fell into a dry well on Wednesday in the village of Rekna, part of Ghassoul municipality in El Bayadh province, triggering a rescue effort that stretched on for four days.

Rescuers completed excavation of a parallel shaft around midnight between Friday and Saturday, after which a Civil Protection officer descended to begin digging a horizontal tunnel toward the boy. The operation, however, ran into further complications before his body was ultimately recovered.
