Beyoncé Donates $2 Million To Studio Museum In Harlem On Her 45Th Birthday

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Global superstar Beyoncé Knowles marked her 45th birthday on September 4 by donating $2 million to the Studio Museum in Harlem.

In a press release, Beyoncé emphasized the importance of accessible art:“Art tells all our stories; the past and the present, but is not always accessible to everyone.” She expressed admiration for the museum's community integration, noting it introduced her to“several of my favorite young and upcoming Black artists through exhibits.” She added that the institution serves as“a place of inspiration where all audiences can discover new stories through the canvases of diverse storytellers that reflect our humanity.” The museum did not immediately provide details on the use of these funds.

This gift follows the museum's November reopening of its $160 million David Adjaye -designed facility on 125th Street, after a seven-year closure. ARTnews writer Maximilíano Durón described the new building as“stunning.” The institution also received a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting in 2023 from financier Joseph Perella and his wife Amy, making it one of the few US museums to own a work by the artist. Masterpieces by artists such as Barkley K. Hendricks, Kerry James Marshall, Howardena Pindell, Faith Ringgold, and Carrie Mae Weems were on display at the reopening.

Thelma Golden, the museum's director and chief curator, stated:“I am deeply grateful to Beyoncé, both for the generosity of this gift, especially on her birthday, and for recognizing the vital role that the Studio Museum plays in people's lives.” Golden highlighted the museum's founding mission to“shift the arts landscape and reimagine who that landscape serves,” noting that the donation“will allow us to continue strengthening our work for Harlemites, New Yorkers, and audiences across the globe.”

Beyoncé, known for her record-breaking career with 35 Grammy Awards and over 200 million solo records sold worldwide, has frequently incorporated significant artworks into her visual projects. Her husband, rapper and music mogul Jay-Z (born Shawn Carter ), is a notable collector, listed among ARTnews Top 200 collectors. The couple filmed parts of their 2018 single“Apeshit” video at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In 2020, Alex Greenberger wrote for ARTnews that“Each time Beyoncé releases new music, it might as well be considered an art-world event too.” He noted her inclusion of prominent artists in her videos and her joint efforts with Jay-Z to build“an important collection of Black art.” Forbes estimates Beyoncé's net worth at $1 billion.
