Historic Korba Street To Become Pedestrian-Only After Redevelopment

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) Ibrahim Pasha Street in Cairo's historic Korba district will become pedestrian-only, with cars barred from entering once redevelopment work is completed, as part of a project to restore building facades, upgrade utilities and preserve the area's architectural character.

Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad issued instructions to prevent vehicles from entering the street after inspecting the project, while calling for arrangements to accommodate residents and businesses, the ministry said in a statement.

The project covers around 250 metres of the street and includes upgrades to the facades of 64 shops and 13 buildings classified as having distinctive architectural character, as well as landscaping and infrastructure improvements. The ministry is fully financing the work.

Outdoor extensions used by shops and cafes have been reorganised, while storefront entrances and commercial signs are being standardised. Air-conditioning units have also been repositioned and fitted with decorative covers to reduce visual clutter and preserve Korba's architectural identity.

Fibre-optic telecommunications and gas networks have been completed, while work on the electricity network is around 90% finished. About 25% of a subsidiary sewage connection running from Al-Masalla Street to Ibrahim Pasha Street has also been completed.

Facade restoration has begun on buildings in two sections of the street from the Baghdad Street side, while scaffolding is being installed in two other sections from Al-Ahram Street ahead of further restoration work.

Awad also ordered surveillance cameras to be installed to monitor the street after redevelopment and prevent the return of unauthorised street encroachments or other alterations.

The ministry said residents and business owners had been consulted before the redevelopment work began. Awad called for the remaining work to be accelerated and coordinated across utility upgrades, facade restoration and landscaping.
