270 Runners Compete In 17Th Petra Desert Marathon

Petra, Sep. 5 (Petra) – The 17th Petra Desert Marathon 2026 kicked off on Saturday, with the participation of approximately 270 runners from various countries.

The event took place in a unique sporting and touristic atmosphere, reflecting Petra's "distinguished" qualities for hosting international sporting activities.

The marathon features two main routes: A full marathon of 42 kilometers and a half race of 25 kilometers, combining athletic challenge in the region's unique desert landscape.

As for the results, Jordanian runner Salameh Al-Aqra'a won first place in the full marathon competition (42 kilometers), while fellow Jordanian Bashir Abu Rahma ranked 1st in the half marathon (25 kilometers).

The marathon is organized to enhance Petra's position as a "global" destination for sports and adventure tourism, and leverage sporting events to promote the region's rich tourist, natural, and archaeological attractions.

In a statement, Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) underlined the importance of hosting such global sporting events, given their role in promoting adventure and sports tourism and showcasing Petra as a "qualified" tourist destination to host various international events and activities.

The authority commended efforts of all organizing and participating entities in ensuring the marathon's success and their dedication to providing the necessary support for participants and guaranteeing the event's smooth implementation, reflecting Petra's prominent position as a tourist attarction.
