Sudan's Army Repels RSF-SPLM-N Assault in Blue Nile State
(MENAFN) Sudanese authorities said Friday the army beat back an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on the Al-Baraka area in Blue Nile state.
Officials in Al-Kurmuk town said the army and allied forces "repelled an attack launched by the RSF militia and SPLM-N forces on the Al-Baraka area in Al-Kurmuk locality" Friday morning, adding that "Army forces inflicted heavy losses on the attackers in lives and equipment." The statement said several combat vehicles were destroyed and remaining fighters were pushed toward the Ethiopian border.
The RSF has not responded to the claim.
The clash came two days after Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited Damazin, Blue Nile's capital, to inspect the army's 4th Infantry Division and assess its readiness. On Tuesday, the first contingent of joint forces from armed groups allied with the army arrived in the state, which has seen intensifying battles with the RSF and SPLM-N.
On Aug. 29, the army announced it was deploying an elite brigade tied to the General Intelligence Service to the Bakkori front in Blue Nile. The RSF claimed on Aug. 28 it had seized the Bakkori and Sarkam military bases southeast of Damazin. A day earlier, the army said it downed a hostile strategic drone that crossed from Ethiopia — the third such interception in a week.
Fighting between the army and RSF has also gripped Darfur and the three Kordofan states since Oct. 25. Sudan's war, raging since April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced roughly 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
