Kremlin: US May Push Ukraine to Halt Strikes Before Envoy Visit
(MENAFN) Washington could press Ukraine to suspend its attacks ahead of a visit to Russia by US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the Kremlin said Friday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a briefing that Moscow would not engage in direct talks with Kyiv on halting hostilities before that visit takes place.
"The Americans will probably demand that the Ukrainians cease their terrorist attacks," he said, according to media.
Peskov said no concrete terms for a Ukraine peace deal currently exist, though he stressed efforts are ongoing. He also warned that Ukraine's military buildup, including plans to develop long-range missiles, would ultimately harm Ukrainians themselves.
Ukrainian lawmaker Aleksey Goncharenko said on Telegram that Witkoff and Kushner are expected to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday following a Saturday stop in Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday he expects Trump's envoys in Kyiv "in the coming days."
Witkoff and Kushner have yet to visit Kyiv despite repeated trips to Moscow since US-mediated talks began, most recently on Jan. 22, when they met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Moscow and Kyiv last held US-brokered negotiations earlier this year across three rounds — Jan. 23-24, Feb. 4-5 and Feb. 17-18 — with the first two in Abu Dhabi and the third in Geneva. Talks have since stalled, with both sides pointing to Washington's shift toward the US war on Iran that began in late February.
