Rubio Heads to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru to Cement Regional Alliances
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru from Sept. 8-10 to bolster key American partnerships across the Western Hemisphere, the State Department announced Friday.
Rubio is set to meet Colombia's new government under President Abelardo De La Espriella, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, and Peru's new leadership under President Keiko Fujimori, State Department spokesman Thomas Pigott said in a statement.
Discussions will center on US support for Colombia's earthquake recovery, expanded cooperation against narcoterrorism, and deeper trade ties between the three nations and Washington.
The trip reflects a broader US push to deepen security and trade cooperation with Latin American governments, with counter-narcotics and organized crime increasingly central to Washington's regional strategy. The State Department said the visit will reaffirm the Trump administration's commitment to a "secure, prosperous, and democratic Western Hemisphere."
Colombia recently joined the Coalition Against Cartels of the Americas (A3C), a Trump-backed alliance targeting drug trafficking and organized crime. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said De La Espriella has authorized joint US-Colombian counter-narcotics operations on Colombian soil.
Colombia, Ecuador and Peru rank among Washington's top regional partners in combating drug networks and security threats, as the administration seeks closer alignment with like-minded governments. Rubio is also expected to discuss security cooperation with Noboa, building on joint US-Ecuador counter-narcotics operations carried out over the past year.
