Orange Alert: Extreme Heat Grips Southern France Through Weekend
(MENAFN) Seven departments across southern France will fall under an orange heat wave alert starting Saturday as scorching temperatures continue to blanket much of the country's southern half, Meteo-France said, according to broadcaster Franceinfo.
Pyrenees-Orientales joined five departments already under orange alert — Ardeche, Aude, Drome, Gard and Herault — at 4 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) Friday.
Temperatures were set to spike sharply Friday afternoon, especially in the southwest and the Rhone Valley, climbing to between 35C (95F) and 38C (100.4F).
"Monthly heat records are again likely in some places," the forecaster warned.
Vaucluse will join the orange alert list starting at noon Saturday. Overnight lows between Friday and Saturday are expected to hover between 19C (66.2F) and 23C (73.4F) along the Mediterranean coast.
The unseasonably intense heat is forecast to persist at least through Sunday across southern France, particularly the southeast, while the northern half of the country will see milder conditions, with highs staying below 35C (95F).
