Malaysia Declares State of Emergency Over Hazardous Haze
(MENAFN) Malaysia declared a state of emergency in Sarawak's Serian district on Friday after dense haze drifting from forest and peatland fires in neighboring Indonesia sent air pollution soaring to hazardous levels.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on X that Malaysia's King, Sultan Ibrahim, had signed off on the emergency declaration.
"The government will continue to monitor developments and ensure that all necessary actions are implemented promptly, including mitigation measures as well as the dissemination of information and health advice to the public," he said.
Serian's Air Pollutant Index rocketed past 500 on Friday, blowing through the emergency threshold; Malaysian authorities classify any reading above 300 as hazardous.
Sarawak, located on the Malaysian side of Borneo, has borne the brunt of smoke drifting from fires in Indonesia's Kalimantan region.
Malaysia launched a three-day cloud-seeding effort in Sarawak on Thursday aimed at replenishing dam reservoirs and thinning the haze — a technique that involves dispersing particles into clouds to trigger rainfall.
Indonesia is running its own cloud-seeding campaign as it battles fires spreading across its forests and peatlands. Berton Panjaitan, spokesperson for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, told Anadolu on Friday that operations ran from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 to capture available rainfall, boost soil and peatland moisture, and both suppress active fires and head off new ones.
"Indonesia has deployed a total of 34 aircraft to support the cloud-seeding operations, or Operasi Modifikasi Cuaca (OMC), in different priority areas," he said.
