Ukraine's Spy Chief: No Ceasefire With Russia Before 2027
(MENAFN) Ukraine's intelligence and Presidential Office leadership does not anticipate the groundwork for a ceasefire with Russia falling into place before spring 2027, according to Kyrylo Budanov.
The New York Times reported Friday, citing an interview conducted with Budanov last weekend, that he sees little chance of a halt to the fighting materializing any sooner.
"Negotiations will sooner or later come to something. You cannot fight your whole life," Budanov said.
The comment followed a video address a day earlier in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv anticipates meeting with US President Donald Trump's envoys "in the coming days."
Zelenskyy said "preliminary dates" have been set for the envoys' visit to the Ukrainian capital, adding that Kyiv is preparing to host the delegation, which is also slated to hold talks in Moscow.
The last US-brokered round of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv took place earlier this year across three sessions — Jan. 23-24, Feb. 4-5, and Feb. 17-18 — with the first two held in Abu Dhabi and the third in Geneva.
Talks have since stalled, a pause both sides blame on Washington's shift in attention toward Iran following the eruption of war there in late February.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner have yet to set foot in Kyiv despite multiple trips to Moscow since the US-mediated process began, most recently on Jan. 22, when they met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Media reported Friday, citing sources, that the two envoys are expected to travel to both Moscow and Kyiv this weekend.
