UEFA Bans Fenerbahce Duo After Lyon Brawl, Fines Club

(MENAFN) UEFA handed down suspensions and fines Friday to Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood over their conduct in the second leg of the club's Champions League playoff against Olympique Lyonnais.

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body banned Guendouzi for four European club matches and fined him €50,000 ($58,500) for insulting others, provoking spectators and breaching basic standards of conduct. Two of the four matches were suspended for a one-year probationary period, leaving the French midfielder to serve an immediate two-match ban.

Greenwood was hit with a one-match suspension and a €30,000 fine for violating conduct rules, though the entire ban was deferred for a year, meaning he won't miss a match unless the sanction is triggered.

UEFA also fined Fenerbahce €30,000 for lighting and throwing pyrotechnics, €15,000 for crowd disturbances and €50,000 for broader conduct violations. The Turkish club said its legal team is reviewing the rulings.

"Our club will pursue the necessary arbitration applications and appeal procedures before the UEFA Appeals Committee against the sanctions imposed," Fenerbahce said.

The sanctions stem from a post-match confrontation after Fenerbahce beat Lyon 2-1 in France to reach the Champions League league phase 3-2 on aggregate. Guendouzi and Greenwood — both former players for Lyon's rival Olympique Marseille — allegedly taunted home fans before a brawl erupted as they exited the pitch. Tunnel-area footage showed Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira attempting to kick Guendouzi, sparking a further scuffle involving players and staff. Guendouzi also gestured at Lyon supporters and shouted "Allez l'OM" — "Go Marseille."

The midfielder later said Lyon fans had targeted his family with insults throughout the match. "For 90 minutes, and even more during the warm-up, they insulted my family. It is something that affects you deeply," he said.
