Trump Team Drafts Post-War Mideast Plan to Box In Iran: Media
(MENAFN) The Trump administration is drawing up a post-war Middle East strategy aimed at containing Iran through regional cooperation and deeper Israeli-Arab normalization, media reported Friday.
The plan is still in early drafting stages, meant to guide US policy through the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's term following the Iran war, with work underway at both senior political and interagency levels, according to the report. Trump has reviewed the strategy with top advisers in two recent meetings and privately called his ambitions "something much bigger" for the region.
Three priorities have reportedly taken shape: forging a regional bloc of US partners to contain Iran with Washington as guarantor; tackling fallout from the Oct. 7 attacks — including the next phase of Trump's Gaza ceasefire plan, an Israel-Syria security pact, and the rollout of the Israel-Lebanon agreement; and widening the Abraham Accords through a possible Saudi-Israeli normalization deal.
Media noted that Israel's Oct. 27 elections and November's US midterms loom large over the timeline. While the administration hopes Israel's next government backs the strategy, officials reportedly said Trump plans to push forward regardless of the vote's outcome, even amid political gridlock.
A source briefed on the effort said the drafting process could stretch on for weeks. "They are cooking it but it is not yet cooked," the source said, adding: "The idea is to tie a whole lot of things in the region together — how you create a regional alignment after the war. It is still unclear if all U.S. allies in the region will be on board."
