At Least 21 Killed, Including Children, in Sudan Ethnic Attack
(MENAFN) At least 21 people — among them women and children — were killed in an attack by the SPLM-N, allied with the RSF, in South Kordofan state, the Sudan Doctors Network said Friday.
The independent medical group said the assault struck the Debi and Luweiri areas south and west of Kauda, home to the Atoro tribe, killing the victims and wounding others while forcing large numbers of civilians to flee. The network accused SPLM-N forces of targeting civilians "on an ethnic basis" and condemned the assault as "a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the rules protecting civilians."
The attack follows a string of similar incidents: on Aug. 25, the network reported 27 people, including four children, killed in strikes it attributed to the SPLM-N "on an ethnic basis" in two South Kordofan areas. On Aug. 20, SPLM-N forces seized Kauda, their stronghold, as part of a broader operation against an Atoro tribal uprising in Heiban locality. On July 2, Sudan's government condemned "bloody events and grave violations" in Kauda that left civilians dead and wounded.
The unrest traces back to a border dispute between the Shawaya and Atoro tribes that spiraled into armed confrontation. On May 13, the network said more than 61 people, including nine children and five women, died in earlier SPLM-N-Atoro clashes in Kauda.
The al-Hilu-led SPLM-N has fought Sudan's government since 2011 seeking autonomy for South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and RSF have waged a broader war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced roughly 13 million people, producing one of the world's worst hunger and humanitarian crises.
