Pacific Island Leaders Raise Concerns Over Chinese Missile Test

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) "> KABUL (Pajhwok): Leaders of Pacific island nations have expressed concern over China's test of an intercontinental ballistic missile in the region, calling for greater transparency and advance notification of future tests.

According to Reuters, Surangel Whipps Jr., president of Palau and host of this year's Pacific Islands Forum, said China's ICBM test in July passed over several Pacific island nations without adequate prior notification from Beijing.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday at the end of the annual forum, Whipps said leaders had called on all countries conducting ICBM tests to ensure transparency and provide reassurance, including by giving at least 24 hours' advance notice before a test, in line with international practice.

Reuters quoted Whipps as saying that Nauru had opposed the position.

Nauru has previously switched diplomatic recognition between China and Taiwan. In 2024, it restored diplomatic relations with Beijing.

Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen, who attended the forum alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, said on Friday that it was“entirely reasonable” for the majority of Pacific nations to express their views, while acknowledging that one or two countries could take a different position.

The Chinese missile test took place in July and was the first known Chinese missile launch over the Pacific since September 2024, according to Reuters.
