Over 900 Families Flee Renewed Yemen Fighting in Taiz in Just 48 Hours
(MENAFN) More than 900 families have been uprooted in two days as combat between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis intensified in western Taiz province, local officials said Friday.
Preliminary figures put the toll at 917 displaced families between Thursday and Friday, as fighting flared in Maqbanah district and nearby Jabal Habashi, according to the Taiz office of Yemen's Planning and International Cooperation Ministry.
Officials said the violence forced residents out of several communities and displacement camps, with residential areas and shelters for the displaced also coming under fire. Families fled Ozul Al-Yaman, Al-Abdalah, Al-Ashmalah and Al-Jubb camp within Maqbanah, while others left Al-Rahbah and Al-Rajhi camps in Jabal Habashi for safer ground in Jabal Habashi and Al-Ma'afer districts.
Authorities cautioned that the displacement count would likely climb further if hostilities persist. Many families reportedly fled with little notice, abandoning belongings, and now face "extremely difficult" conditions, the ministry office said, appealing for "urgent, multisectoral humanitarian intervention" before the crisis deepens.
The exodus follows heavy clashes since early Thursday across fronts in Taiz and neighboring Hodeidah province near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Local media, citing military sources, report dozens of troops and Houthi fighters killed or wounded, alongside civilian casualties, though no official consolidated toll has emerged.
The violence extends a pattern of clashes dating to July that shattered a relative calm along Yemen's front lines since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022. The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and other cities since September 2014, while the internationally recognized government holds much of the south, east and west.
