Sudan: Five Dead, Including Child, in RSF-Allied Shelling of Dilling

(MENAFN) Five people, among them a child, were killed and several others wounded Friday when an armed faction aligned with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled the city of Dilling in South Kordofan state, southern Sudan, a medical monitoring group reported.

The Sudanese Doctors Network said on the US social media platform X that the barrage hit civilian neighborhoods and facilities in the city's southern and western districts.

The group blamed the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu and allied with the RSF, for the Friday morning assault on Dilling, calling it "a clear violation of international norms prohibiting attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure."

The al-Hilu-led SPLM-N faction controls swaths of the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan. In February 2025, it joined the RSF and other factions in signing a charter in Nairobi, Kenya, establishing a rival governing authority for Sudan.

That alliance unveiled a presidential council in July 2025 headed by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo — widely known as Hemedti — with al-Hilu serving as his deputy.

Dilling, the state's second-largest city, endured a nearly two-year siege by the RSF and SPLM-N before the Sudanese army reopened the road into the city on Jan. 26. Even after the siege lifted, Dilling has continued to absorb artillery fire and drone strikes amid ongoing clashes.

South Kordofan has emerged as one of the war's most active fronts in recent months. The broader conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted on April 15, 2023, over the paramilitary force's proposed integration into the military, and has since engulfed large portions of the country.
