Yemeni Jets Strike Houthi Lines in Taiz for First Time Since July
(MENAFN) Warplanes loyal to Yemen's internationally recognized government joined the battle against the Houthis on Friday evening, striking rebel positions in western Taiz province for the first time since fighting escalated in July.
"Warplanes belonging to the Yemeni Armed Forces have entered the battle in Taiz," the army-aligned Taiz Military Axis said in a statement.
The aircraft backed ground troops and "struck Houthi positions on the Hays front, west of Taiz, for the first time," the statement added, offering no further detail.
The Houthis had not responded as of 2015 GMT.
Multiple fronts across Taiz and the neighboring coastal province of Al-Hudaydah — near the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait — have seen intense combat between government forces and the Houthis since early Thursday, leaving casualties on both sides.
Yemen had experienced a relative calm since a UN-brokered truce in April 2022, in a conflict now stretching nearly 12 years between the government and the Houthis, who have held the capital Sanaa and other territory since September 2014.
Combat has reignited in several provinces recently — including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz — deepening one of the world's most severe humanitarian and economic emergencies.
A Saudi-led coalition backs the government side, while Iran is widely accused of arming the Houthis, who declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in July.
