Trump Says Putin Isn't Eyeing NATO as Moscow Talks Loom
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Friday he does not believe Russian President Vladimir Putin harbors ambitions to strike NATO territory, revealing that envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are set to fly to Moscow carrying a plan designed to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to a close.
Pressed on whether Russia might target a NATO member state, Trump leaned on his personal rapport with the Kremlin leader to dismiss the notion outright.
"I don't think that Putin will be. I speak to him. I know him very well. Putin's not looking to attack NATO territory," Trump said.
The president clarified that his negotiators are not shuttling between fresh proposals but delivering a single, unified framework meant to end the fighting.
"They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," Trump said, referring to Kushner and Witkoff.
He pointed to the strained rapport between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a key obstacle standing in the way of a settlement.
"It's a personality problem in Russia-Ukraine. You have President Zelensky and President Putin. They truly hate each other," Trump said.
Trump said he tasked Witkoff and Kushner with testing whether real headway toward peace is achievable.
"They're two great negotiators. They've done a great job," Trump said, adding there "may be a good chance" of sealing a deal.
