Japan Issues Top Landslide Alert as Rainfall Hits Record Levels
(MENAFN) The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level landslide warning Saturday for the town of Yakushima in Kagoshima prefecture after rainfall reached unprecedented levels.
"There is a very high possibility that some kind of disaster has already occurred in areas designated as landslide hazard zones," the agency said in a statement, describing the rainfall as "unprecedented."
The JMA stressed that lives are in "imminent danger" and called on residents to act immediately to protect themselves as the storm continues to batter the region. Officials advised that if reaching a designated evacuation center proves too dangerous, residents should instead move to a building located far from cliffs and streams.
The agency cautioned that waiting for a special warning to be issued often means it's already too late to escape safely. "To protect your own life and the lives of your loved ones, do not wait," the agency added, urging the public to heed instructions from local authorities.
