Yemen Launches First Airstrikes on Houthis Since July
(MENAFN) Yemen's military carried out 15 airstrikes Friday against Houthi rebel targets in the Taiz and Al-Hudaydah provinces — its first direct action in the conflict since fighting escalated in July.
The Yemeni Army Media Center said air force jets struck Houthi positions, troop gatherings and vehicles along front lines on the western coast. The army-linked Taiz Military Axis said the airstrikes gave critical backing to ground forces battling Houthi fighters in the Hays front west of Taiz.
The Houthis, who have held the capital Sana'a since 2014, had not responded to the strikes as of Friday.
Clashes have raged since Thursday across multiple fronts in Taiz and neighboring Al-Hudaydah, a coastal province near the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, which links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The renewed fighting has produced casualties on both sides.
Violence has picked up across several Yemeni provinces in recent weeks, compounding a conflict that has already fueled one of the world's most severe humanitarian and economic crises.
