Germany Rejects Russia’s Decision to Close Goethe-Institut Offices
(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticizes Russia’s decision to shut down Goethe-Institut branches, describing the move as regrettable and unjustified while warning that it could further strain relations between the two countries.
"The Goethe-Institut makes a valuable contribution every day to fruitful cultural relations and social exchange between Russia and Germany,” Wadephul says during a meeting with his French and Polish counterparts in Weimar. “Against this background, the measure now announced by the Russian Federation is very regrettable because it is further damaging our relations.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Moscow plans to close Goethe-Institut offices in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. The decision comes in response to Germany ending an agreement concerning the Russian cultural center known as the “Russian House of Science and Culture” in Berlin.
Lavrov also rejects Berlin’s accusations that Russian intelligence services were responsible for the Aug. 4 drone incident at Leipzig Airport. He argues that Germany based its decision on the assumption that the drone resembled equipment previously associated with Russia.
