Russia Seeks to Divide Europe, Weaken Trust—Czech President
(MENAFN) Russia is using sabotage, disinformation and other forms of indirect pressure to erode confidence in European institutions and deepen divisions among EU member states, Czech President Petr Pavel says.
In an interview, Pavel says Moscow recognizes that launching a direct military attack against NATO is not a realistic option, leading it to rely increasingly on hybrid methods to pursue its objectives.
He says Russia’s tactics include sabotage operations, incursions into sovereign airspace, maritime provocations and disinformation campaigns. According to Pavel, these efforts are intended to undermine public trust in European institutions and reduce support for Ukraine.
The Czech president also says Moscow wants to portray European countries as unable to respond effectively to such threats. However, he argues that the strategy has produced the opposite effect by strengthening unity within the EU and NATO and reinforcing their determination to support Ukraine.
Pavel’s comments come as Czech authorities prepare stricter measures to track the movements of Russian diplomats across Europe following Germany’s accusation that Moscow was involved in an attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, according to reports.
Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka says the Foreign Ministry and intelligence agencies are working to revise the notification system used to monitor Russian diplomats’ movements.
