Germany Praises French, Polish Support Amid Russia Tensions
(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul thanks his French and Polish counterparts for their solidarity as Berlin accuses Moscow of carrying out hybrid attacks and attempting to target Leipzig Airport with a drone.
Speaking alongside the French and Polish foreign ministers at a joint press conference in Weimar, Wadephul says the incident demonstrates that Russian aggression can extend well beyond its own borders.
“The incident at Leipzig Airport has once again shown us in Germany that Russia’s aggression does not stop at borders—not at the Bug River, not at the Oder, and not even at the Rhine,” Wadephul says.
He expresses appreciation for the backing Germany has received from EU and NATO partners since the accusations emerged, stressing that the allies remain united in efforts to deter Russia and maintain support for Ukraine.
“We greatly appreciate the solidarity and support our partners have shown us since yesterday,” he says.
Wadephul says Berlin has “no illusions” about Moscow but remains open to “engage in a reasonable dialogue” if Russia changes its approach toward Europe.
“The prerequisite for this is that Russia finally ends its war of aggression against Ukraine and, above all, refrains from all attacks of any kind against us,” he says. “We constantly have to contend with violations of sovereignty by Russia; and this must stop.”
The German foreign minister adds that restoring normal relations with Russia appears “a long way off” under current circumstances, while emphasizing that Germany remains fundamentally willing to rebuild those ties in the future.
“Yet, the fundamental willingness to do so remains.”
