Spain Dismisses Claims of Moroccan Orchestration of Ceuta Migration
(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says there is currently no conclusive evidence that Morocco organized the large-scale movement of migrants into Ceuta, as opposition parties and politicians from different sides of the political spectrum question the government’s handling of the episode.
Addressing parliament on Thursday, Sanchez says Spanish intelligence agencies have so far found no indication of Moroccan involvement in the mass crossings, while warning that Madrid would respond decisively if credible evidence were to emerge.
His remarks follow reports that a police intelligence assessment alleges Moroccan security forces helped direct approximately 72,000 migrants toward Ceuta on July 30-31 as part of an operation that reportedly had objectives extending beyond migration.
Sanchez also discloses that Spain summoned Moroccan Ambassador Karima Benyaich on Aug. 21 after statements from Moroccan ministers regarding Ceuta and Melilla.
Morocco’s justice minister describes the two Spanish-administered enclaves as a “historic and geographical right” belonging to Morocco and calls for a “definitive solution” that would place them under Moroccan control.
The revelation of the diplomatic summons leads opposition figures to question why the government did not make the move public earlier. Opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo accuses Sanchez of being a “coward” for dealing with the matter “covertly.”
