Armenia Would Not Oppose Russian Base Withdrawal—PM
(MENAFN) Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says Yerevan does not view Russia’s 102nd military base as essential and would not oppose its withdrawal if Moscow chose to remove it from the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Yerevan about his recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, Pashinyan also says Armenia would prefer Russia to transfer its rights under the railway concession agreement to another country.
“We have not raised the issue of the Russian military base even once during this period, and it is not the case that we consider the presence of the Russian 102nd Military Base on the territory of Armenia to be a vital necessity,” he says.
The future of Armenia’s railway network is also discussed during the leaders’ meeting in Bishkek on Tuesday. Putin says further investment in the railway system would depend on freight volumes, while the opening of additional routes could generate new cargo traffic and make further investment financially viable.
