Belgium Sees Thousands of Excess Deaths as Heat Waves Intensify
(MENAFN) Nearly 3,000 additional deaths are recorded in Belgium during heat waves this summer, according to updated figures from the country’s public health authorities.
The second and third heat waves account for around 900 excess deaths combined, bringing the total number of additional fatalities linked to periods of extreme heat to 2,935.
The second heat wave, lasting from July 4 to 17, results in 535 excess deaths and an excess mortality rate of 14.8%.
Flanders records the highest number of additional fatalities at 310, while Wallonia reports 198 and Brussels records 42.
The third heat wave, which continues from July 28 to Aug. 16, is linked to another 365 deaths. Authorities describe the resulting excess mortality as "slight."
June 27 remains the deadliest day of the summer, with 641 deaths recorded and an excess mortality rate reaching 146.5%.
Health officials also stress that the effects of extreme temperatures extend beyond older people.
"Significant excess mortality was also observed among people under 65," the public health institute says.
