Russia Strengthens Oil Refinery Security Amid Rising Drone Attacks
(MENAFN) Russia is reinforcing security measures around its oil refineries as Ukrainian drone strikes against energy infrastructure increase, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak says Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Novak says oil companies are responsible for securing their facilities and are coordinating with the Defense Ministry and National Guard to improve protection.
“Regarding the protection of energy facilities, businesses are taking a responsible approach. In accordance with the threat model, they provide physical protection of the facilities and also work with the Defense Ministry and the National Guard to obtain the necessary means to protect refineries,” he said.
Novak says Russian refineries now have security measures that he considers at least comparable to those used at facilities in the United Arab Emirates. Some UAE sites have introduced tall metal structures and protective netting around oil storage tanks to guard against attacks.
“Believe me, we are no worse, and perhaps even better, taking into account the experience we have gained over the past several months,” he said.
He adds that Russian engineering and design institutes are cooperating closely with refinery operators to develop additional safeguards based on “a more stringent threat model.”
“This work has been intensified in recent months in view of the increased attacks on oil refineries,” he said.
