US Envoy to NATO Backs Germany After Leipzig Airport Attack
(MENAFN) US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker expresses solidarity with Germany following recent hybrid attacks targeting Leipzig Airport, reaffirming Washington’s support for its NATO ally.
"The United States stands in solidarity with Germany and all Allies in the face of efforts to cause harm and chaos on NATO territory," Matthew Whitaker wrote on US social media platform X.
Whitaker also stresses the importance of strengthening NATO’s collective defense capabilities, saying: "We remain committed to NATO’s collective defense and clear-eyed about the need for Allies to increase their capabilities to deter all threats to the Alliance."
His comments come a day after German authorities accuse Russia of being behind an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month and announce a broad package of measures and sanctions against Moscow.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt says investigators determined that Russian intelligence services were involved in planning the operation, while lower-level operatives were responsible for carrying it out.
Leipzig Airport is a significant cargo and logistics center and plays an important role in transporting military-related shipments, including Ukrainian Antonov flights. Officials describe the disrupted drone operation as an effort to interfere with this support network without resorting to a conventional military assault.
Moscow rejects allegations involving assassinations, sabotage, drone activity and espionage in countries supporting Ukraine, accusing Western governments of fueling what it calls "anti-Russian paranoia."
