Erdogan Says SCO Membership Does Not Mean Turning Away from West
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s pursuit of membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) does not signal a move away from the West, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Wednesday, emphasizing Ankara’s intention to maintain a broad and balanced foreign policy.
Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential aircraft after returning from the SCO Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Erdogan says Türkiye aims to strengthen its international influence by maintaining relations across different regions. He attended the summit at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
"Our goal is to increase our own weight with a 360-degree vision," he said.
Addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Erdogan says both he and Russian President Vladimir Putin want the war to end peacefully as soon as possible.
He also highlights the need to protect civilian maritime transportation in the Black Sea, warning that the conflict should not escalate to a level that puts civilians or commercial operations at risk.
Erdogan further warns that the global grain crisis is beginning to resurface, particularly across Africa. He says taking early action would be useful to prevent the situation from becoming more serious.
