France Supports Sanctions Over Leipzig Attack, Targets Russian Shadow Fleet
(MENAFN) France will back German efforts to impose sanctions over what Berlin describes as a Russian-linked hybrid attack in Leipzig last month, while also seeking additional restrictions on vessels associated with Russia’s shadow fleet, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot says Wednesday.
Speaking before an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers in Ireland, Barrot expresses France’s “full solidarity” with Germany over the incident, which German authorities attribute to Russia.
He characterizes the attack as part of a wider campaign by the Kremlin aimed at weakening the European Union, interfering with democratic institutions and undermining European support for Ukraine.
“We will not allow an act of such gravity to go without consequences,” Barrot said. “We will support the sanctions proposals put forward by Germany. We will also propose sanctions against a number of vessels belonging to the shadow fleet.”
Barrot also says he summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires in Paris to deliver a strong diplomatic protest, based on evidence presented by German authorities.
According to the French minister, the evidence indicated “an intention to sabotage this aircraft and this logistics site,” which had been used by Germany and other European countries to provide assistance to Ukraine.
Leipzig Airport serves as an important cargo and logistics center, including for Ukrainian Antonov flights carrying military-related shipments. Officials have characterized the intercepted drone operation as an effort to interfere with the supply network supporting Ukraine while avoiding a direct conventional military strike.
