Northern Cyprus Announces Capsized Passenger Vessel Is Located
(MENAFN) The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus says the wreckage of a passenger vessel that capsized off Girne has been located as search and recovery efforts continue.
President Tufan Erhurman says the wreckage has been identified and that underwater imaging and search operations are being carried out around the clock.
"The vessel has been located. Imaging and search operations are continuing on a 24-hour basis. They will continue without interruption," Erhurman said in a statement on social media.
He says the TCG Alemdar has reached the area and joined the ongoing search mission. The vessel is equipped with technology similar to that of the TCG Isin, which has been involved in underwater searches off Girne since Tuesday.
The high-speed passenger vessel Filo Jet operates between Girne Port in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Tasucu Port in Mersin province in southern Türkiye. It began taking on water from the front section shortly after leaving Girne at around noon Sunday.
The vessel later overturned while attempting to return to Girne Port, triggering a major rescue and search operation.
Authorities say 241 people were rescued following the incident, while eight bodies were recovered. Search teams have continued looking for 20 people reported missing after the vessel capsized.
The wreckage is located approximately 550 meters (1,804 feet) beneath the surface off the coast of Girne, adding significant challenges to the ongoing recovery operation.
