Iran’s IRGC Says Tankers Hit Mines in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says two oil tankers explode after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz, while warning shipping companies against using routes that Tehran considers unauthorized.
The IRGC says the vessels had first disembarked their crews before being transferred to personnel associated with the US military for passage through what it describes as an “illegal route.”
According to the statement, the two tankers “hit mines, exploded and were brought to a halt,” with both vessels catching fire afterward.
The IRGC does not disclose the names of the tankers or provide information about their flags, precise location or whether anyone is injured or killed in the incidents.
Iranian naval forces had previously warned ships about the risks associated with navigating through the area where the mines were located, according to the statement.
The IRGC also threatens to impose what it calls “additional punitive measures” on shipping companies that permit their vessels to travel through the disputed route instead of using the passage Tehran recognizes as authorized.
