London Mayor Faces Fine Over Untaxed Vehicle
(MENAFN) London Mayor Sadiq Khan is convicted and fined after being held responsible for failing to ensure that a 24-year-old Nissan Micra was properly taxed, according to reports Wednesday.
The 55-year-old mayor is found guilty by a court of keeping an unlicensed vehicle following a criminal case brought by the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Court documents indicate that correspondence concerning the vehicle’s unpaid tax was mistakenly sent to the east London restaurant of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay rather than the nearby offices of Transport for London (TfL), the public body overseeing most of the capital’s transport system.
Officials at City Hall maintain that neither Khan nor TfL owns the vehicle.
The case is handled through a private hearing under the Single Justice Procedure in Herefordshire, where Khan is convicted in his absence. He is ordered to pay a £220 ($297) fine, £85 ($114) in legal costs and the outstanding £35.84 ($48.43) vehicle tax.
Legal documents indicate that the prosecution follows the expiration of the car’s annual road tax in September 2025. The Nissan Micra was originally registered 24 years ago.
Despite the conviction, officials continue to state that the vehicle is not owned by Khan or the transport authority, adding another unusual element to the case involving the London mayor.
