Four Fall Art Books Chronicle Deaf Culture, Chicana Life, Gaza

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Four new art books launching this fall delve into diverse cultural experiences, including a memoir of East Los Angeles girlhood, an archive of deafness in pop culture, essays on artists' roles, and a collection of photos and poems from Gaza.

Scheduled for a September 8 release from One World, East of the River: A Memoir of Los Angeles Girlhood by Chicana artist and educator Guadalupe Rosales emphasizes the importance of personal storytelling. The memoir integrates images and ephemera from Rosales's personal archive, featuring photographs of family, friends, lowriders, and party flyers. These visuals are integral to the experiences documented, echoing her multi-media installations and addressing the absence of diverse voices in existing archives, according to associate editor Phillip Pyle.

Primary Information will publish Christine Sun Kim's Deaf Material on September 15. Associate Editor Lisa Yin Zhang notes that the book, which features over 600 images Kim has either captured or found, serves as a comprehensive archive of deaf imagery in mainstream culture, including memes, advertisements, disability signage, and art. The book offers insight into Kim's distinctive artistic perspective, characterized by incisive, humorous, and poignant works across drawing, installations, and video.

Also arriving on September 15 from W. W. Norton & Company is Signals Across Vast Distances: Essays and Tales by poet, scholar, and Mellon Foundation President Elizabeth Alexander. Associate editor Lakshmi Rivera Amin expressed anticipation for the collection, recalling Alexander's 2015 poetic memoir, The Light of the World, which explored grief following the death of her husband, artist Ficre Ghebreyesus. The new collection examines the enduring question of artists' societal roles.

On September 22, Milkweed Editions will release Exhibit G: Poems, Essays, and Photographs of Gaza by National Book Award finalist Fady Joudah. Hakim Bishara highlights the collection's poignant portrayal of Gaza's children, depicting their struggles amid loss and rubble. The work uses photos, poems, and essays to convey stories of resilience, asserting that Palestinian resistance and survival are profoundly expressed through the experiences of Gaza's children.
