Scandinavia House Presents“The Cold Stitch” Nordic Textile Exhibition

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Scandinavia House is currently presenting“The Cold Stitch,” the third iteration of its NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER program, which features an exhibition, a workshop series, and a symposium celebrating contemporary Nordic textiles. This year's program, presented in partnership with New York Textile Month, focuses on textile art as an evolving practice with deep roots in Northern European cultures.

The exhibition runs from September 4 through September 16 and showcases artists from across the Nordic region who engage with textiles as both a material and a language. Artists include Margrethe Aanestad (Norway), Valgerður Bergsdottir (Iceland), Ellen Dynebrink (Sweden), Ragna Froda (Iceland), Heidi Hankaniemi (Finland), Ingunn Fjóla IngÞórsdóttir (Iceland), Lee Jensen (Denmark), Andrea Magdalena Jonsdottir (Iceland), John K. Raustein (Norway), Randi Samsonsen (Faroe Islands), Sunna Sigfríðardóttir (Iceland), Nora Martine Hjelle Strand (Norway), Thórunn Elísabet (Tótalisa) (Iceland), Josabet Werkmäster (Sweden), Mette Winckelmann (Denmark), and Kiyoshi Yamamoto (Norway). The works explore how textile traditions have evolved in contemporary art through techniques such as quilting, patchwork, collage, weaving, hand embroidery, sculptural textiles, and visible and invisible stitching. Many pieces emphasize reuse and transformation, giving new meaning to discarded fabrics, garments, yarns, and textile remnants.

The event schedule includes several activities at Scandinavia House, located at 58 Park Avenue in New York City. A curator walkthrough led by Ragna Froda took place on September 5 at 2pm. A basket weaving workshop with Leila Bacch was held on September 8 at 5:30pm. Artist talks featuring Thórunn Elísabet (Tótalisa), Nora Martine Hjelle Strand, and Ingunn Fjóla Ingfiórsdóttir took place on September 12 at 2pm, followed by another curator walkthrough and reception from 4pm to 6pm. A stitching circle workshop with Thórunn Elísabet (Tótalisa), Nora Martine Hjelle Strand, and Andrea Magdalena Jónsdóttir occurred on September 13 from 12pm to 4pm. An artist talk and workshop with Heidi Hankaniemi is scheduled for September 16 at 3pm to 6pm, with a final curator walkthrough at 6pm on the same day.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12pm to 6pm from September 4 to 15, and Wednesday, 12pm to 8pm on September 16.

Organized by the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF),“The Cold Stitch” is co-organized by Ragna Froda (Iceland/U.S.), director of New York Textile Month, and Emily Stoddart (Canada), manager of exhibitions and community programs at Scandinavia House. Ragna Froda also serves as the exhibition's curator.
