Operations Resume At Berlin Airport

BERLIN, Sept 4 (NNN-dpa) -- Flight operations at Berlin's international airport were running as normal on Friday after a hazardous materials alert forced the evacuation of Terminal 1 the previous evening, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The BER airport's flight information page showed just a small number of cancellations in the wake of the incident.

"For early Friday morning, airlines have cancelled two departures, as the relevant aircraft were unable to land at BER on Thursday evening," a spokeswoman said.

Passengers who were unable to fly on Thursday or Friday would be informed by their airlines about alternative travel options, she said.

Terminal 1 was evacuated after a woman told officers at the Federal Police service point that she was carrying a hazardous substance. All passengers were required to leave the building.

Flight operations were not suspended, but delays occurred and there were isolated cancellations. Police cleared the terminal at around 8.45 pm (1845 GMT), and the all-clear was given later that evening.

According to the Federal Police, there was no danger at any point, based on current findings. No details were initially provided about the substance that was examined. The results of the investigation are expected in the coming days.

"We are still in the process of evaluating," a spokesman said on Friday morning.
