High Museum Of Art Adds Over 200 Acquisitions For Centennial

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The High Museum of Art in Atlanta will commemorate its centennial this fall by unveiling more than 200 recent acquisitions, some of which will be featured in its American and African Art collection galleries.

Among the works to be displayed in the American galleries are a rare painting by Jacob Lawrence, a quilt by Carolyn L. Mazloomi, and a piece by folk artist Grandma Moses. The African galleries will exhibit paintings, textiles, and ceramics by artists including Ben Enwonwu, Nike Okundaye, and Jimoh Akolo.

A new series of exhibitions, including a survey titled“Nexus” by Martin Puryear, will debut on October 18, which marks the High's centennial. On that Sunday, the museum plans to host a“Centennial Block Party” with gallery tours and a public talk celebrating a century of art in Atlanta.

The museum has also highlighted its progress in diversifying its visitor base. Since 2015, visitors of color have increased from 15% to 55% of total attendance, bringing the museum's demographics closer to Atlanta's broader population.

Rand Suffolk, the director of the High, stated,“Over the past decade, we have made significant strides toward becoming a profoundly different magnet in Atlanta and to being the art museum that our city deserves. We are poised to enter our next 100 years as a dynamic, intentional and essential contributor to the cultural fabric of our city, an organization, in fact, dedicated to connecting and strengthening our community.”
