Erin Milez Paintings Show Detachment In Crowded Cities

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Paintings by Erin Milez, which depict the dense urban environments of New York City and explore human connection, are now on view in an exhibition titled“Everything the Light Touches” at Monya Rowe Gallery.

Milez, who recently relocated from New York to Seattle, delves into themes of intimacy and isolation within metropolitan settings. Her expressive style draws inspiration from artists such as George Tooker and Jacob Lawrence, known for their distinctive figurative compositions of urban life. The works also evoke the social realist aesthetic found in Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals, which frequently adorned civic buildings. Milez infuses her textured paintings with a similar dynamism, yet also a contemporary sense of detachment.

Her compositions often feature figures compressed into confined spaces, sometimes obscured by nature or architecture. Despite their proximity, the subjects appear self-absorbed and disengaged. In“A Giving Tree,” for example, two individuals stand beneath blossoming branches in what could be an intimate moment, but their inward focus prevents connection. Other pieces, like“Pick Your Plot,” show a woman curled up on a crowded beach, while“Subway” depicts passengers engrossed in their electronic devices. In these crowded scenes, interaction is absent, and a sense of calm pervades.

The exhibition“Everything the Light Touches” will remain on view from September 10 to October 24 in New York. Featured works include“Walk Sign Is On,”“A Giving Tree,”“Inside Flower,”“Subway,”“Golden Hour,”“Up Side, Down,”“He Shoots,”“Camo,”“Stationary,” and“Hark! The Rain.”
