Kate O'connor

Kate O'Connor is Senior Lecturer in Policy and Leadership in the School of Education at La Trobe University.

Kate's research locates in the sociology and history of education and focuses on curriculum policy and practice, educational inequality and young peoples' aspirations and pathways through education. She has expertise in qualitative research methods, historical research and policy analysis and is currently working on projects focused on young people's aspirations, pathways and futures thinking over time, and equity and curriculum form in senior secondary curriculum. Previous research projects have engaged with digital platforms and the university curriculum, the changing context of disciplinary knowledge across the educational trajectory, the challenges and affordances of archiving and sharing qualitative research data, and changes in school curriculum policies between states and over time.

Kate's book publications include Australia's Curriculum Dilemmas: state cultures and the big issues (MUP, 2011, with Lyn Yates and Cherry Collins), Knowledge at the Crossroads: physics and history in the changing world of schools and universities (Springer, 2017, with Lyn Yates, Peter Woelert and Victoria Millar), Unbundling the University Curriculum: MOOCs, online program management and the knowledge question (Springer, 2022) and Temporality, Space and Place in Education and Youth Research (Routledge, 2023, with Julie McLeod, Amy McKernan and Nicole Davis). She is a convenor of the AARE Curriculum Inquiry SIG, an Editorial Board member of the Curriculum Journal and a former Associate Editor of Curriculum Perspectives.
