Over 100 Underground Schools Operating In Ukraine, Education Minister Says

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Andrii Butenko said this during a television broadcast, according to Ukrinform.

“Currently, 82% of students, if we are talking about schools, can be accommodated in various types of shelters. These are different kinds of shelters – sometimes basic ones, sometimes large open spaces. And we now have more than 100 fully operational underground schools,” he said.

According to Butenko, 131 such shelters are currently under construction across Ukraine and will provide a full-fledged educational process underground.

“Eighteen of them are kindergartens... This year, the state has allocated UAH 6 billion for the construction of such shelters,” the minister said.

At the same time, he said he believed that the shelters needed to be further improved.

“Many of them need improvements and repairs. Unfortunately, there is an enormous amount of work ahead for all of us – for local communities and central government bodies alike – because we have seen the enemy's ruthlessness in many parts of the country, including Kyiv. And we must be prepared for various challenges... We have to adapt and, despite all the threats, prepare our children for their future lives,” the Education Minister stressed.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Ministry of Education and Science is working with partners to ensure that the educational process is properly maintained in view of the security situation in the country.
